uniformity

First day of the holidays washing line.

Confessional time: I hate uniforms.  I’ve heard and understood all the arguments in favour, but I find uniforms futile and depressing.  I like to see my children looking recognisably themselves.  Packing them all away for six weeks is a high point in my annual calendar.

And don’t even get me started on why they always have a high manmade fibres content, and never ever fit…

  1. To say nothing of why you invariably have to buy new ones every single year….

  2. I am totally with you on the hating uniforms thing. I too have heard all the arguments and still come down on the side of ‘what is the point?’

The thing annoying me most at the moment is the fact my son will need compulsory football boots (as well as trainers) in his PE kit when he starts secondary school in September. Now firstly, he hates football, and secondly, the girls don’t have to have them. Sexist tosh! Bah humbug.

    • I would suggest you could challenge that one, except I suspect that’s why A was told she had to have football boots. Which she has never ever worn. Because the girls don’t actually play football, but you’re not allowed to say so in official publications…

Uniforms suck. Frankly, why should the school get to dictate what you wear 5 days a week? And all that about schools with uniforms have better discipline – that doesn’t mean the uniforms are the cause of that.

I hated my uniform – it fitted no one flattered no one and in my case itched like mad. However in a school like mine where some were very rich and some very poor – the strict uniform policy did mean it was not immediately obvious who had a scholarship but that’s not a consideration for most schools.
